For over 20 years, SelfLube has been manufacturing components for the mold and die industry. It all began when owner, Phil Allor purchased some used machinery and began making a product called a “self-lubricating wear plate”, hence the name SelfLube. A wear plate is a component that is used to guide and control linear motion where there are heavy forces involved, which is often the case in a large die or mold. The self-lubrication came from graphite, a solid lubricant, which is similar to the lead of a pencil.

Over the years that SelfLube has been in business, it has expanded its product line many times in order to meet the needs of its customers. The Portuguese Association for Artificial Intelligence has been organizing Portuguese Conferences on Artificial Intelligence, now held every second year, since 1985. This volume contains selected papers from the Fifth Conference on Artificial Intelligence. The conference has an international status: 62 contributions from 13 countries were received, of which 26 were from Portugal. To guarantee a high scientific standard, all the contributions were reviewed by at least three researchers,and only 20 papers were accepted and included in these proceedings. As British Summertime finally draws to a close Aviva is calling on all homeowners to beware Halloween hooliganism and bonfire night burglaries as latest statistics show that when the clocks go back crime goes up.

Avoid the Wrong Kind of Fireworks

Research conducted by the insurer with 16 police forces across the UK found that the week from 30 October to 5 November last year saw an average increase in reported burglaries of 26%* compared with the weekly average for the rest of the year.** The highest increase was in Strathclyde where police saw an increase of 57% in reported burglaries for that week compared with their weekly average for the rest of the year. This is supported by ten years of Aviva claims data which shows a 28% increase in burglary claims on Bonfire Night, making it the worst night of the year for break-ins.

Rob Townend, property claims director at Aviva says,

“Shorter days present more opportunities for criminals to work under cover of darkness. On Bonfire Night in particular, many people are out of the house at public displays or at parties and the noise of fireworks provides a distraction and means that suspicious sounds such as smashing glass aren’t heard.”

Halloween Horrors

Halloween also presents a threat to homeowners as tricks take a more sinister turn. Ten years of Aviva claims data shows a rise of 150% in malicious damage claims to the home with damage to cars rising by 50% and car thefts also increasing by 20%. Common Halloween claims include smashed windows, vandalism to vehicles and damage to garden property.

Rob Townend, property claims director at Aviva says,

“Unfortunately, the combination of darker nights and a mischievous occasion like Halloween or a noisy one like Bonfire Night present too good an opportunity for some criminals to resist. These are real hotspots in the crime calendar when homes and cars can be more at risk than any other time in the year.

“However, simple measures can help to minimise the risk – put the car in the garage if you have one, tidy up any loose garden items or ornaments so they are not used to cause damage and make your house look occupied if you are going out by leaving lights on and of course make sure all doors and windows are securely locked.

“Obviously, theft and malicious damage are covered as standard by your home insurance if the worst does happen, but it’s best to take steps to avoid having the worry of being a victim of crime in the first place.”

REMEMBER REMEMBER…TOP TRICKS TO AVOID BEING TARGETED BY CRIMINALS:

· Put the car in the garage or tucked out of the way for the night

· Move any garden ornaments, potted plants or bikes from the front or side of your house and out of sight

· Don’t feel you have to answer your door, to trick or treaters, if you don’t want to.

· Leave the radio and the odd light on when you’re out during the winter to give the appearance of someone being home

· Ensure sheds, garages and other out-buildings have robust locks

· If you enjoying a firework party in the garden, make sure your front doors and windows are shut and locked

Coronation Street stars Steve Arnold and Simon Gregson recently swapped the limelight of the television screens for the more peaceful surroundings of The Camping and Caravanning Club’s Albufeira rally site in Portugal.

The duo, who play Ashley Peacock and Steve McDonald in the hit ITV soap, took time out from their busy schedules to attend the popular Pig Roast, organised by rally stewards Bob and Lyn Geary on behalf of The Club’s Carefree Travel Service.

Steve and Simon mingled with Club members and joined in organised events on site.

“My friend Steve has a caravan on site at Albufeira and we were invited to come along for the Pig Roast,” said Steve, who first appeared on the Street in February 1995, when seen assisting Fred Elliott in his butcher’s shop.

“We had a great time and were made to feel very welcome. My father-in-law has a caravan and I fancy getting one as well. I also used to do a lot of tent camping in Wales when I was a child.”

“It is nice just to get away and enjoy some peace and quiet. The weather in Portugal certainly beats Weatherfield!”

Simon, proprietor of the Rovers Return and co-owner of Street Cars taxi firm, also admitted to being a keen camper and added: “When I was young I camped with my mum and dad in a trailer tent in Cornwall.

“We caught the back end of Hurricane Charley, the tent area flooded and we were the only ones left standing!”

Bob and Lyn Geary, who have been stewarding rallies with The Club for seven years, were delighted to welcome the celebrities to Camping Albufeira, which forms part of The Club’s winter camping programme.

“We found both Steve and Simon very friendly, sociable and down-to-earth and their presence provided the rally with a great boost,” said Club member Bob.

“We have watched Coronation Street religiously for years and love Simon’s wit and Steve’s infectious laugh.

“We hope they return with some of their Street friends in due course.”
