Of course you do need to know just a little bit about beekeeping and the operation of the beehive prior to beginning to construct a beehive.

Keeping bees has been a hobby and a business world wide for a very long time and in that time the main activities of beekeeping have been refined.

This is particularly true of the hive. There are numerous totally different designs of beehive, but in all probability the most widely used is the Langstroth Hive.

The Langsthroth bee hive is a well-known box shape and is a relatively simple construction that has been developed over many years to make keeping bees and the extraction of the honey a lot easier.

In case you are new to keeping bees and you are excited about making a bee hive then get a woodworking plan for a Langstroth bee hive.

Langstroth hives can have various numbers of frames on which the bees build their honeycombs, usually 8 to 10, the spacing between the frames, the top, bottom and sides is critical for the highest efficiency of the hive.

When Langstroth constructed his beehives he did so in a way that the frames that the honeybees use to make their honeycombs were mechanically separated from all the other parts of the bee hive. This includes the frames themselves, the walls, the bee hive floor and the cover. He decided that the most effective separation was 3/8 inch (9.5 mm).

Without suitable separation the bees will basically cement the entire thing together making it very difficult to take away the honeycombs.

Let’s face it when you’ve got difficulty in removing the honeycombs it is more likely you’ll make your bees angry so look for a woodworking plan that has the correct mechanical separation.

The essential parts of Langstroth’s bee hive from top right down to the bottom are:-

* The Outer cover – this is usually made from timber or polystyrene and goes on the top of the bee hive. In the north, where the outer cover usually telescopes down over the inner cover and an inch or so (25mm) down over the top super, it is referred to as a telescoping cover. Commercial beekeepers often use what is termed as a migratory cover, this is a solid cover that doesn’t extend further than the sides of a hive body.

* An Inner Cover

* The Hive Body or Honey Super ( one or more) – these can be made of timber, polystyrene, or other plastic. If you’re building a beehive then timber is most likely the easiest material to use.

– The hive can have a queen excluder between the brood box and honey supers.

– Often there can be 8 – 10 frames per hive body or honey super and these can be fabricated from wood or plastic.

– The foundation is made from wax and wires or plastic

* And lastly the bottom board which optionally can have an entrance reducer.

Building a bee hive is actually not that difficult when you have the right plan and now you understand what to look for.
