Staying in Albufeira, Portugal for one week in early October – it it worth hiring a car?

Or is everything fairly accessible on foot? We’ll be staying with a young child so won’t want to be out late or anything. And does anyone know what the weather’s likely to be like?
Thanks

you do not say where you are staying, but it really is worth getting a car, as there is so much more to see, than just the normal tourist parts. have a look at albufaria.com it will give you lots of info ie weather restaurant recommendations and so on. I’m of their in three weeks cannot wait, happy hols

Yes as the rest of the Algarve is much better Albuferia is being developed beyond recognition and the best way to see it is by car.

The weather should still be quite good but forget to swim in the sea (too cold). You only need to rent a car if you want to explore the beautyful Algarve or have the famous chicken-dinner in the Monchique Mountains.

Having a car will give you freedom to do what you want. Naturally you can do a lot on foot or even have a big adventure on the buses. The weather in October is normally warmish in the day but, you will need to cover up in the evening. Have a lovely time… you must try the Sardines they are a wonderful treat not to be missed.

If you don’t want to travel to other regions of Algarve, then don’t hire a car, as everything is very close (considering you’ll stay in the city centre). However if you want to explore other villages, then I recommend you to hire a car.
IMO, I never go to Algarve without a car, I hate going to the beach, so I’m always moving from one place to another.
September is cooler, so if you are going in October, you better take a coat, because it will be a little bit chilly in the evening. Quite frankly, October is not the best time to go to Algarve, most things are close, if you are staying in a hotel ask beforehand if their bar, swimming pool, etc are going to be operational during that month, most hotels close them down after summer.

I’ve just come back from the Algarve. I hired a car and found it worthwhile. Albufeira is lovely, but it is a tourist’s paradise. The restaurants cater for the tourists and are much more expensive. If you want a taste of the real Portugal, you should travel inland a bit and explore the little villages. Not only will you find real bargains, but you will see the real Portugal. The night life in Albufeira is really lovely, but for the daytime, I would recoment hiring a car.
